Musicology as a Tool for Musicians, Marie Verstraete

from 10.30 until 11.30

Too often musicology and music practice seem worlds apart. They might even appear to be each others antipodes: theoretical versus practical or rational versus emotional. This lecture however will not reflect on those differences, but rather on the common ground of both disciplines and on how they can profit from one another, especially for musicians in the field of Early Music.

Introducing Historical Performance Practice, Julia Miller.

from 15 to 16 o'clock

While a vast, rich repertoire of early music exists which we can perform and enjoy today, there are many puzzles about how this music was performed in the past. We live hundreds of years after it was written, and much of the needed performance information was not written into the original music sources. This lecture will introduce the lively area of Historical Performance Practice, which studies

      -   how earlier music was originally performed and

      -  how we might apply the historical practices in an informed way to music performances today.

Topics to be introduced include:  Which historical instruments were used? What were they like at the time, compared to today? How did they play? In what circumstances did they play? How was music interpreted then? How was it notated? How did music manuscripts differ from our modern music editions?

Discussion and questions will be very welcome.

Performing Early Music from Facsimiles: Delights and Challenges, Julia Miller

from 10.30 to 11.30

Original manuscripts and editions of Early Music contain a wealth of information in addition to the music notes. These fascinating details are of great value to today’s musicians interested in offering historically informed performances. Facsimile editions reproduce original music sources and give us access to many of their secrets. This lecture will introduce and explore some of the many advantages and challenges of working with these facsimiles, or copies. It will look at issues such as understanding the original historical notation. The presentation will be illustrated with images of many beautiful manuscripts and early editions.
